As most everyone knows, I'm a huge fan of the Xbox 360.  I have had mine for over a year and really enjoy how seamlessly it has integrated itself into our family.  Sarahpoo and Amberpoo may actually use it more than me now, and it is the only DVD player in our living room.  I was wondering how the PS3 was going to stack up against the year old Xbox 360 and to be frank, I am utterly shocked at how similar they are in graphics and amazed at some of the items the PS3 can't get right that the Xbox 360 has been doing from launch.  One of the greatest things I love about my Xbox 360 is the up-scaling feature.  I have an older Mitsubishi 65" HDTV and it doesn't handle 720p.  No worries, the Xbox 360 will upscale everything to 1080i.  It looks gorgeous!!  Seems that a special scaler chip is inside the Xbox 360 that handles all of that magic so the processor and graphics chips don't get bogged down worrying about what output resolution needs to be done.  Found a great article that explains it really well over at Ars Technica.

Needed Upgrades to Xbox Live PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot
Saturday, 02 December 2006

Below are just three of the changes that I think the Xbox Live Spring Dashboard update should include to help Microsoft grow it’s online advantage.

Online Game Save Storage.  Microsoft needs to offer online game save storage for Xbox Live Gold members.  This would be a huge advantage for owners who only have a core package and would be a great backup for those of us with a hard drive.  It is not if a hard drive will fail, but when and currently I have no easy way to backup all of my game saves.  This would also be great when you travel over to a friend’s house to be able to get to all of your game saves without having to carry a memory card that may not be big enough to hold everything.  Only offer it to people who are Gold membership

Web Browser.  This doesn’t have to be as fully featured as IE7, but it should be functional enough to do general surfing.  I should be able to pause a game such as Splinter Cell Double Agent and be able to bring up the web browser to find the solution to that stupid email encryption hacking cube.  (That was ridiculously hard!!)  Unpause the game, play some more, then pause and open the browser and it should be on the same page I left it.  It will in no way replace a regular PC web browser; only add to the pervasiveness of being able to access content from all of your connected devices.  Only offer it for users with a hard drive and Xbox Gold level membership.  The Windows XP download was only 14megs, so for the Xbox 360 I guess it might be 30megs since there are probably some items that are native in XP that would need to be included for the Xbox 360 version.

Enhance the Gold Membership level.  Microsoft has just recently started offering game demos to Gold members first.  This needs to be expanded.  Themes and picture packs should be free to Gold members and cost Silver members.  New Dashboard enhancements should be offered first to Gold, then months later to Silver.  When new content hits that is available for everyone, Gold members need to have priority in the download queues.  Have prizes and give a ways of various game related posters, shirts, stickers, etc. for Gold members only.  It was good that Microsoft introduced the Silver level, but as a Gold member, I currently feel that I am subsidizing the features that the Silver members get for free.  Gold members need to feel that they are getting a true service level like first class vs. coach.  Right now it feels like my first class membership only allows me to board the plane first and sit in the front row of coach.  I shouldn't have to see advertisements on my dashboard if I am a Gold member.  Advertisements should be limited to Silver since they don't pay anything.  For those of us who have been on Live since the beginning, give us a special look to our gamertag.  Make us alumni or something like that.

Adding these items would nullify most of all the advantages that the PS3 has introduced and be innovative in offering features that the PS3 team hasn’t even considered.

Yes, we are still here....been busy....lots of stuff has happened....some good......some bad.....you know....the normal way life is.  We have put an update in the Photo Gallery to remember Sarahpoo's sister Amy who's work here on earth was completed and she left to go and see her oldest son David.  We are quite confident that they are having a wonderful time and look forward to the day when we will all be reunited.  Life is like a life saver.  It is sweet, but is also too short.

Xbox360 Live Arcade PDF Print E-mail

OK, it's official....we as a family are addicted to the new Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360.  We have bought three games now, Bejeweled 2, Zuma, and now Outpost Kaloki X.  Sarahpoo is currently playing two or three others that we will more than likely buy as well.  You just have to love being able to buy a simple fun game for $10 and getting to try it before you buy it.  Can't wait to see what else they bring out in the coming months.  I would buy the old arcade game called Kix which came be downloaded for PC at http://www.dosgames.com/g_cla.php

WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot
Sunday, 15 January 2006

Well I learned a new TLA (Three letter acronym) today and I must say that it applies here at my home.  WAF - Wife Acceptance Factor.  Seems that some guys have a tendency to go overboard with gadgets in the wife's view.  I can't understand that since I think all gadgets are cool, but I can see this with my wife Sarahpoo.  So, now when I want a new gadget I have a name to the process of figuring out a way to sell this to her.  I'll give a couple of examples.

DVR - Digital Video Recorder.  I wanted to get the new DVR that Dish was offering.  Talked to Sarahpoo about it, and she said I could get it, but that she didn't think it was useful or that she would use it.  The WAF was very low on this one, but after we got it the WAF shot through the roof.  She found that she couldn't watch TV without it and just loved how she could record all sorts of shows that she would normally miss and it wasn't a hassle to program.

Xbox 360 - WAF initial factor was not very high since we already had the original Xbox and it was still working fine.  Once we got it and then got Hexic, Zuma, and Bejeweled 2 it was a fight for time to use it.

As you can see, sometimes the WAF is low then grows.  I don't know if this is failure on my part to do a good sales job, or if my wifey just has to experience it before she accepts it.  I know the next gadget I want I will have to work harder on the sales pitch.

WIFE'S RESPONSE: Thanks honey, you make it sound like I never let you get anything. Just to set the record straight... There was never a question of whether he would get the Xbox 360. He must be recalling the day that I asked him why the 360 was so much better than the classic. I will admit that I was a bit turned off by the price, but again, there was never any intention on my part to prevent him from getting his 360. As far as the DVR, I will admit that I didn't think I would use it much, until we got it.

Merry Christmas to All PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot
Sunday, 25 December 2005

Well, we survived another Christmas.  It was wonderful.  Friday night the 23rd we went to Sarahpoo's parents and had the normal torturously slow gift opening marathon, then spent the night and did stockings the next morning.  Everyone got lots of neat stuff, and we had many laughs.

Christmas eve we participated in our church play and it went very well.  We had 700-800 people attend (actually, we just found out there were 1100+) and the jumbled mess that was practice a couple of days earlier dissapeared and a beautiful event happend.  Weird how things seem to gel at the last moment.

Christmas morning we got Amberpoo up at around 7:15 and starting in on her presents.  At about 7:25 Mammy and Papa showed up and got to watch het tear into her gifts.  I got some cool shake flashlights that require no batteries.

Christmas afternoon we went over to my Cousins house to celebrate with my Mom.  Good food, and great gifts happened there as well.

Pictures should be up sometime tomorrow.  Now I just need to figure out where to put all of this stuff!!!!

Got my Xbox 360!!!! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot
Thursday, 22 December 2005

I would like to say that I really love my wife.....she is wonderful.....love her....yup, that is what I am saying....mucho love!!!!  She braved the cold this morning to stand outside Best Buy on a hint that they might have some Xbox 360's coming in today and sure enough they did.  She got one for me, then promptly called and told me that she had locked the keys in the truck.  I thought that she was kidding and giving me an excuse to leave work, but she wasn't.  Had to drive West side of town, about 40 miles to let her in the truck.  Can't complain though, it used up the major debt that I was in for her picking up the 360 for me.....then again, she wouldn't have locked the keys in the truck if she hadn't been getting my Xbox 360.....crud, guess I still owe her big time.  Have I mentioned that I love her????

So, one month to the day after launch I got my new Xbox 360, and what great games have I played.......Bejeweled 2.  Yup, I've had it hooked up for almost 5 hours and it hasn't played any of the four great games I have ready for it.  I did the Connect to my Windows XP home computer and played some music while doing a slide show on our Europe pictures and it was very nice in 1080i!!!!  Amberpoo is playing now, so maybe I will get a chance to check out Call of Duty 2 later this evening.

WOW...after getting home from my futile trip to the Best Buy in Conroe, TX this morning at 5:30AM, I got home all depressed and while going to post about my dashed hopes on www.xbox.com on the forums, I saw that someone had just posted that you could buy them online at www.bestbuy.com.  So, I went and sure enough, they where available.  I ordered one and it says that it should arrive to my house anywhere from 12/20 to 12/23 going ground for shipping.  YEAH!!!!!  Then I went back to look at the description to see if it included the bonus remote and they where sold out.  MAN, they went quick.

EBay Sucks!!!! PDF Print E-mail

Well, looks like I won't be getting a Xbox 360 from Best Buy today.  Seems that the lines filled up for all available units at about 10:30PM last night.  I got to the Best Buy in Conroe at 5:30AM and it was hopeless.  Worst thing was that it seems that the people in line where buying them to put them on EBay.  I'm OK with missing out on the new Xbox 360 if I know it's going to a loving home, but it really irritates me that they are just going to be on EBay so someone who doesn't even want one can turn an extra couple hundred dollars.  I guess the only way I can console myself is to image that all those people didn't have any money for Christmas and this was the only way they could get some money.  Merry Christmas to them.  I won't be one giving them the money though.  I'm saying NO to EBay.

Well, I can say that they are starting to trickle into the Houston area now.  A coworker just picked one up at SAMS, but when I called they where all out.  I now have four games, an extra wireless controller and two plug and charge kits, but no XBOX360 to use them on.  Tomorrow morning I am going to go and camp out at the Best Buy that is near me to see if I can get one from there.  Hope I don't freeze!!!

We are back!!!!  Felt good to sleep in my own bed.  We will be updating the photos later as well as quite a few posts about our trip.  All I can say is WOW.  Italy blew me away with how old and beautiful everything was.  Best thing about France was the Normandy cemetery where our WWII troops are buried.  It was very emotional and made me want to watch Saving Private Ryan again for the beach scenes.  Most everywhere we went was nice, and we felt very welcome.  Amberpoo loved her gifts.

HURRICANE RITA - Wind and a few drops of rain. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Sarahpoo
Sunday, 25 September 2005

09/25/05 - IT'S OVER for us... Our hurricane Rita experience was mild.  We were blessed and we are thankful for that.  God protected us by moving the landfall about 80 to 100 miles to our East.  We did have tropical storm force gusts and 30 to 40 mile per hour winds for probably 10 to 12 hours but we did not sustain any damage.  Our only inconvenience was 30 hours without power. We were never without water and we were able to keep track of what was happening with the storm on a battery opperated radio.  We did lose most of what was in our freezers but that can all be replaced and it was in need of being cleaned out anyway.  The high temperatures over the next few days will be very hard on the people that still do not have their power back.  Ours came back on just as we were about to leave and spend the afternoon with friends.

We were able to get gasoline for our vehicles today (I had 1/4 tank and Alex had less than 1/2 tank) and it was only  $2.99 per gallon.  This was another answer to prayers.

We were able to spend some nice time with our next door neighbors and they had a neat family thing happen Thursday.  These things probably would not have happened if Rita had not come to town.  God even uses Hurricanes...   Amber got to spend most of Thursday, Friday and Saturday outside which is basically her idea of a perfect day.

Please remember those who were hit by Rita as they repair and rebuild.

Sarah

I have posted a few before and after photos of our yard in the Photo Gallery.
