DUH!!!! My 2005 Prius beeps and the last bar on the digital gas gauge flashes when it thinks it is time for me to refill. Well, I've gone over 50 miles after that event happens before, so I generally just make a note that I need to fill up. Well after about 30 miles after the beep, I was cruising down the freeway when I just lost power and things started beeping and a big red triangle flashed on the display. Yup, I was out of gas. I quickly exited to the feeder, but there was no gas station to be found. I had to go about 3 miles before I was able to fill up. The battery was all the way down to one bar. I was really amazed that I was able to go that far. Neat. Accourding to everything that I have read on other Prius websites, that shouldn't have hurt the car in any way, and other people have experienced the low battery condition when driving through the mountains.
New mental note.....don't wait that long.
