WOW!!!!  This little tool just saved me quite a bit of time.  I had a system in which no known passwords would work to the local users.  Created the linux boot floppy, and followed the on screen instructions, and presto.....local administrator password reset to blank.  NEAT!!!!  You of course need physical access to the box, but man is this a powerful tool for when your family members lock themselves out of their own computers.  I also put a link on my Links page for future reference.

I currently use a PDA/Phone from HP called the Ipaq 6315, and am generally happy with it, but really wish it had a keyboard.  Well, looks like there is a new model coming out from HTC that looks really sweet.  Hope it really comes out.

Pruis thoughts after 10,000 miles PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot
Saturday, 28 May 2005
Well my Prius just turned over the magic 10,000 mile mark, and so I thought that I would share my thoughts on how everything is going.  I entered into purchasing the Prius with great anticipation of what would in my mind be a great vehicle.  I can say with 100% authority that my Prius has delivered and surpassed my expectations.  I am blown away at how it accomplishes better emissions and mileage so easily and also has transformed me from an aggressive driver to my new laid back approach.  It didn't demand that I changed as it is fully capable of being driven in an aggressive manner, but it rewards you when you are driving to maximize efficiency in such a way that I want to change.  I haven’t had any mechanical problems, recalls, or anything that has broken due to wear.  I really like the rear cargo cover and how easy it is to use.  At first I thought that the seats were not very good, but they seem to be getting better over time.
Improvements are like all things a matter of opinion, but I have found some things that I believe would make this a much better vehicle.
  1. Give us an option to defeat the traction control.  It makes driving in sand impossible with the way it is now.
  2. LED everything for lights.  They are cheap, and they never seem to burn out.
  3. Electric seat controls.  Everything else in this car is electric, so why must the seats be manual?
  4. Visor extensions.
  5. Better stability at speed….looks like Toyota already has improvements on the way for this one.
  6. EV button.  For when we know we are going to be going slow.
  7. Signal on the screen for when the engine is running.
  8. Some sort of meter so we know how much further we can press the accelerator but still stay in electric mode.
  9. Rear camera – Japan has it, so why don’t we?
  10. Control over how much the auto dimming rearview mirror dims.
Those are my top 10 wanted improvements, but they do not detract from it being a great car.

Gas Mileage update PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot
Wednesday, 11 May 2005

WOW...that Georgia trip really hurt the gas mileage.  I'm getting bummed.  The Prius doesn't like going 70mph up and down hills loaded down with the family and all the baggage it takes to be gone for 3-4 days.  Hopefully the next few weeks will show some better results as the temp is getting into the high 80's during the day and the morning commute is in the high 60's.

I discovered that I don't like the traction control on sandy roads.  The dirt road to my grandparents house is about 2 miles long and has some parts that are very loose sand going uphill.  I had to get a run at it to make it up the hill as the power kept cutting out.  Wonder if there is a way to turn that stuff off when in sand.

Georgia Trip for Funeral PDF Print E-mail

Well, my grandfather passed away on May 5th, 2005, Cinco de Mayo, National Day of Prayer.  We had been expecting it, and I was really glad that four weeks ago we got a chance to go and spend some time with him and let him get to know his great grand daughter a little better.  It wasn't a really sad funeral, but it was uplifting to see all the people that loved him and were there helping my Grandma through this difficult time where she will have to part company with the man she had been married to for 34 years.  They were a shining example of how to have a marraige work, and also how to love God.  I am privileged to have had the honor of being in their lives, and proud of them both.  Can't wait to get up to Heaven and see him again.  Hopefully we can get grandma to travel and spend some time with us here in Houston.

Well, after playing 550+ games, Bungie has reset the Halo2 stats, and added a couple more leader boards.  I'm pumped, but it does suck to have to advance back through everything again.

Hybrid Sales rose 81% in 2004 PDF Print E-mail

WOW...and they thought hybrids were a fad.  The number of registered hybrids rose 81% in 2004 and Toyota alone will double that amount all by its self in 2005.  They predict that by 2015 that 30% of new cars sold could be hybrids.  I know that all future vehicles I buy will be.

Honda Insight hybrid encounter PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot
Saturday, 23 April 2005
Last night on the way up to eat dinner at Cracker Barrel and drop Amberpoo off with Papa and Mammy for the weekend, I saw a red Honda Insight during the traffic backup right before Conroe on I-45.  He was in the right lane, and as my lane inched passed, I honked and gave him a thumbs up.  He returned the gesture, and Sarah and I wondered if he knew my Prius was a hybrid as well, or if he was just acknowledging my appreciation of his hybrid.  Well, a little later it looked like we would be side by side, so we both rolled down our windows to chat.  He said "I just told the clerk at the gas station that he had the auspicious honor of it costing more than $20 for the first time ever to fill up my car." I laughed, and told him that I was at 51.3mpg and he replied back that he was at 56, then I zoomed off into the sunset.  Hybrid fun in stop and go traffic...doesn't get much better than that.  Then at Cracker Barrel I saw a Prius Classic that had hail damage....almost cried.

Georgia Trip mileage results PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot
Tuesday, 12 April 2005
Well, this last weekend the family and I took the Prius on a trip to see my Grandpa and Grandma Valentine near Columbus, Georgia and after 1800 miles we averaged 46.6mpg.  Not bad considering that most of it was at 70mph and up and down hills loaded down with luggage.  I was hoping for 45mpg so I am very pleased with this.  I am also noticing that since it is now warmer and my car has over 5000 miles on it that the displayed mileage is hovering at around 52.  We'll see if it stays there over the next couple of tanks.

Toyota Reports Best-Ever Sales Month; Record First Quarter PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot
Tuesday, 05 April 2005
WOWZERS!!!!   10,236 units sold for the Prius in March which would put it over 120,000 for the year.  Funny that the number sold is actually lower than it could be due to limited supply.  Just imagine what would happen if Toyota had enough supply to sell to everyone that wanted one.  Hmmm.....and some manufacturers say there is no market for a Hybrid.

National Sales Tax to replace IRS PDF Print E-mail
Written by Atoyot

I am a firm believer in replacing the IRS with a national sales tax.  Many people argue about what percentage it should be, but in the end I think it has more advantages than what we have now.  And just think, no more dreaded April 15th!!!
